Modern Farmhouse design is one of today’s most popular design styles and for good reason. Its relaxed and inviting spirit is both practical and attractive. If you want to create a space that seems to whisk you away from reality and into a more peaceful and comfortable state – Modern Farmhouse may be for you.
We had the pleasure of designing beauty influencer Karen Gonzalez aka iluvsarahii’s Modern Farmhouse in Los Angeles, and let’s just say the feedback has been amazing. We like to think it’s because of its laid-back, natural charm, and its country-resort yet modern aesthetic (and also because duh! It’s Karen’s house); but all we really know is that you all loved it! In this blog post we want to share with you how to achieve this style in your own home.
The Basics of Modern Farmhouse Design
When it comes to Modern Farmhouse interiors and decor think rustic and sleek combined with comfort for casual, So-Cal living. It also combines minimalism with some industrial elements similar to Modern and Scandinavian design.
Materials
In our project we used plenty of wood, stone, rattan, and added greenery in almost every room. This was in an effort to bring the outdoors in and really give the home that simple sophistication that it deserves as an already built out Modern Farmhouse. Wood beams and shiplap grace the ceilings; and clean white countertops and matte hardware are used throughout the home and cabinetry. We leaned into natural and organic materials that added warmth and texture, and strayed away from plastics and other artificial materials and colors. These are common design elements that you can implement in your own space that really creates the country-chic vibe that is ‘Modern Farmhouse’.
Furniture, FIXTURES & Decor
Selecting materials goes hand-and-hand with selecting the furniture, fixtures and decor for this style of design. Natural elements and organic lines are what will make it successful. For example, the casualness of upholstered pieces that can be used for the sofa, accent chairs, and/or bed frames will add comfort while wood or cement tables will add a touch of the outdoors and create a sense of peace and serenity. The use of artisanal stone vases, urns, and artwork for styling shelves and walls will be the accessories to tie everything together. In addition, incorporating large lighting fixtures that make a statement along with the right vintage pieces can really be the cherries on top of this design.
One thing to keep in mind while designing your space is to keep it minimal and clean. It’s very easy to go overboard but remember, less is more! One of our biggest pieces of advice is to select pieces that you absolutely love and say no to the rest. Do not rush the process. The best spaces are created over time with love and intention which will make your home so much more enjoyable to live in.
